Registration is still open to attend the AAA Texas Summit on the 4Ds of Driving: Distracted, Drunk, Drugged and Drowsy. The summit takes place Tuesday, September 18, 2018, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Palmer Events Center, located at 900 Barton Springs Road, Austin, Texas 78704. The AAA Texas 4D Summit is a free event that will feature state and nationally recognized law enforcement, public policy, prosecution, and advocacy experts in the areas of the so-called “4 Ds”: drugged, distracted, drunk, and drowsy driving. They will discuss the effects the 4 Ds have on driving and what Texans can do to prevent death and injury related to the 4 Ds.
The impact of the 4 Ds:
- Drugged: The percentage of drivers with prescription opioids detected in their systems at the time of death surged from 1.0 percent in 1995 to 7.2 percent in 2015, according to a study by researchers at Columbia University.1
- Distracted: On average, it takes about five seconds to read a text message. Traveling at 55 miles per hour, that is like crossing an entire football field blindfolded. Six out of 10 teen driver crashes involve distraction, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.2
- Drunk: Nationally, drunk-driving deaths increased 1.7 percent from 2015 to 2016, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- Drowsy: A driver who has slept for less than five hours has a crash risk comparable to someone driving with a .08 blood alcohol content level.
